Design trend #1 Home wellness spaces
Wellness in the home. Mental health is at the forefront of not only design but schools, websites, social media, etc. What used to be a home gym, is now going to be a wellness space. People will be looking to incorporate meditation, yoga, and exercise all into one space. With people spending more time at home, they want to bring more focus onto total well-being, not only physical but mental and emotional side as well. I agree that more thought needs to be given to the spaces in our homes and how we use them. I have many clients removing dining rooms for larger kitchens, and now I see them removing the living room for home offices and wellness spaces. 2023 becomes about using your space to its fullest potential and what is best for the client in their home.
Design trend #2 Sustainable design
Consumers are ditching the cheap and fast pieces that had found their way into designs for items that are more environmentally friendly and won’t end up in a landfill in a few years’ time. Antiques, vintage items, and well-made pieces will be making a comeback. Consumers may take longer to arrive at a decision to spend more but the focus on the sustainability of the piece will win them over. I think that everything is cyclical and comes back around. I see more eclectic design coming into play with consumers wanting vintage but an updated look. It is wonderful to not only see people ditching the cheaply made pieces, but also beginning to consider the ramifications those choices have on the environment.
Design trend #3 Performance fabrics
People with families are tired of having things that don’t look good too. Designers will be tasked with creating a beautiful space that also works well with kids and families. Texture will be big in 2023 and there are lots of options for designers to present to clients that want a certain look, but the function as well. This is great news for designers and clients alike. No more do we have to compromise our design or the look of the space because the space is heavily used. Cheers- and spill away!
Design trend #4 Muted color
Consumers are ready for some more color. We still see lots of neutral spaces, but this year, we are seeing the need for cozier spaces. This means introducing some color- but not in vibrant tones. We will see browns, greens, and blues in more earthy hues allowing for some contrast but keeping it muted and calming. I love seeing color make its way back into designs. Giving us some more options than the gray and white trends. I can’t wait to work these muted tones into designs!
Design trend #5 Warm wood
Warm woods are jumping back onto the scene. With consumers wanting to bring the cozy back, they are stepping away from gray and white kitchens and embracing warm wood tomes in everything from floors to cabinets. I love that this is back again! Gives us so many more options when designing spaces. Sign me up!
Be careful when you use trends in your designs. It’s best to sprinkle them in sparingly so as not to outdate the space too soon. All in moderation I say- some designs will call for more and some less, but bringing in a few trendy pieces can really set the project apart!
